In 2010, a total of 4.98 million passengers had passed through the country's airports – Syria’s highest number ever. Though the government had several plans to develop the country's aviation industry and increase the capacities of its various airports, the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011 had a dramatic impact on the sector.
